Abstract

Based on the growth rate of diesel consumption in the last ten years of about 6% per year. Diesel demand in 2025 is expected to reach around 30 billion liters. Without measures to slow the increase in demand while expanding domestic processing capacity, diesel imports in 2025 are expected to reach 15 billion liters (50% of total demand). This study compares the use of two catalysts, CaO and rice husk ash, and the combination of the two catalysts in the process of making biodiesel from kapok seed oil and the effect of reaction time and catalyst method on biodiesel characteristics. The results given by the two catalysts between rice husk ash and CaO both have advantages and disadvantages, where when viewed in terms of density, viscosity and yield it can be concluded that rice husk ash is better than CaO. However, when viewed from the variable calorific value, it can be concluded that CaO is better than rice husk ash. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the heterogeneous catalyst from rice husk ash is more efficient than the CaO catalyst, both in terms of analytical results and the level of ease of obtaining and in terms of reaction time here it can be concluded that the reaction time is very influential on the characteristics of biodiesel from kapok seed oil. from the results of this study the best reaction time is 3 hours.
